Posh Bothy Holiday Lets provide no smoking, self-catering accommodation for up to 2 adult guests in each property.

The accommodation is single storey and ground floor but is not accessible by wheelchair.

The property locations and access arrangements make them wholly unsuitable for children.

Guests of particularly large build, may find some narrow doorways/access to facilities tight.

The Bothies are not suitable for pets.

You will be sent prior to arrival, detailed directions and a full postal address for the Bothy you are staying in. In the property itself, there is a detailed guest manual with full instructions for your use.

Dora’s Den:

  • Level access from pavement via gravelled garden path and slate patio area into ground floor property
  • Entry through external porch door then 2 internal doors for added security and insulation
  • Level access into ground floor accommodation
  • No steps or stairs

The Den is located on Wansfell Road which is the main loop road around Ambleside village. Outside Dora’s Den, the road is one-way running in a westerly direction. The Den has shared private parking for one vehicle at the side of the house on a private access road. The main entrance is through the garden at the rear of the building. The living room window overlooks the road and church gardens at the front. The bedroom window overlooks gardens then onto fell views at the rear.

The building is a traditional Victorian stone house built in the late 1800’s from Lakeland stone and slate under a slate roof and called West Tweenways. In keeping with a property of this era, the Den has hard wood, sash windows. In more recent times, the property has been updated with modern en suite shower room & kitchen area, double glazing, insulated/acoustic ceiling, solid oak doors and combi boiler gas fired central heating & hot water system.

The Den has oak flooring throughout – we therefore ask guests to remove outdoor footwear and high heeled shoes in the inner hallway and provide a boot tray in the utility cupboard.

The entrance and main emergency exit to and from the Den is via the main door which leads off the living/kitchen area through the rear porch. There are secondary emergency exits from both the living room and bedroom sash windows, the latter being at the rear of the Den with a drop down onto basement level ground below.


Standard check-in is between 4 pm and 7 pm unless otherwise previously arranged.

You will be met by the owner (or their representative) at the property or will have been given a code to access the key lock box and some instructions for self-service.

Refer to the details you have been sent in order to locate the entrance. This is via the West Tweenways garden gate, located on Wansfell Road and leading across the side garden then round the back of the house. The access is all at pavement level with no steps, though care should be taken walking over the slate patio area at the rear in wet or icy conditions as the Lakeland stone can become very slippery.

Access to the main entrance is gained through an external porch and then an internal lobby. Details of how to get through the external and internal doors will have been sent to you.

Once you are in the internal lobby, your key to Dora’s Den will open the main door on the left marked with the number 2 and the Posh Bothy – Dora’s Den signage.

NB Lighting in the area is scant so you MUST carry a torch with you if you are likely to arrive, depart or access the Den after dark as the lack of light pollution means it’s incredibly dark!!


The parking area for Dora’s Den is the one allocated to the building of West Tweenways and is shared with Flat 1. It is located on the private road leading off Wansfell Road down the side of the property. Various neighbouring properties have private parking allocated to them in different areas of this access road. It’s important you only use the area reserved for West Tweenways. This space takes one large vehicle or 2 small ones and is shared between Dora’s Den and ‘Flat 1, West Tweenways’ upstairs on a first come first served basis.

If the space is in use when you arrive, park on the main road in front (Wansfell Road) where you will find free of charge, unrestricted parking.

Please refer immediately on arrival to the parking arrangements you have been sent to ensure you are parking in the correct area. There is a plan on the wall inside the Bothy if you need a reminder or have lost your copy.


Dora’s Den is situated at the vehicular start of the one-way Wansfell Road. It is on the right hand side overlooking the Catholic church gardens. All the shops, inns and restaurants are within a few minutes walking distance.  Lake Windermere at Waterhead is approximately 1 mile away.

The bus stops are just round the corner on Kelsick Road with buses running frequently to Windermere, Kendal, Coniston, Grasmere and Keswick.
The nearest railway station is in Windermere, approximately 4 miles away, with good rail links to Oxenholme on the West coast main line and onward destinations.
Several local taxi companies offer a reliable service – their numbers are in the guest information pack.

INDOORS – Dora’s Den has 2 main rooms as follows:

Living Room with Kitchen Area

Lounge area with 3-seater corner sofa with chaise, bistro-style dining table & 2 chairs, occasional furniture and lamps, TV/DVD/Radio, Bluetooth Music system, CD player

Kitchen area with fitted units, integral fridge with freezer box, electric oven, electric hob & extractor, microwave, fully equipped for 2 person use.

Utility cupboard with washing machine

Larder cupboard with boot tray, iron & board and clothes airer

Bedroom with en suite shower room

Double bed, fitted wardrobe with hanging and shelving, bedside units, stool, TV/DVD, micro-fibre duvet, pillows (2 per person), decorative cushions and throws, extra blanket,  hair-dryer, heat mat, alarm clock.

Shower, vanity unit, heated towel rail, under-floor heating and WC – cupboard housing combi boiler


Shared garden (with 2 other properties in West Tweenways building), garden bench for sitting out (seat pads provided)

Bins and recycling boxes in or near shared porch.


There are fire extinguishers, fire blanket, hard-wired smoke detectors and CO2 detector in the Den.

Mobile phone reception is generally good on most major networks. The Den has Broadband and WiFi connection.

In accordance with the law and for the safety of all, naked flames (such as candles) and any form of smoking is not allowed in any part of the property or curtilage both inside and outside. This includes the use of e-cigarettes and other vapour/nicotine devices.
